THE FOUNDATION PROVIDES SUPPORT TO THE WESTERN GATEWAY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, A DUAL-IMMERSION PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL ESTABLISHED IN THE WHEELER DISTRICT. THE SCHOOL SERVES BOTH AN EXISTING PREDOMINANTLY HISPANIC NEIGHBORHOOD AND THE NEWLY DEVELOPED WHEELER DISTRICT WITH A TARGET ENROLLMENT OF 50/50 SPANISH-DOMINANT AND ENGLISH-DOMINANT STUDENTS. THE PUBLIC SCHOOL HAS A STUDENT POPULATION THAT IS REPRESENTATIVE OF THE SOCIOECONOMIC AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY FOUND WITHIN THE WESTERN GATEWAY AREA, OF WHICH THE WHEELER DISTRICT IS PART. THE FOUNDATION HOLDS THE TITLE TO THE LAND ON WHICH THE SCHOOL FACILITIES ARE CONSTRUCTED AND LEASE THE LAND TO THE SCHOOL FOR A NOMINAL RENT. THE FOUNDATION INTENDS TO PROVIDE PROGRAMS AT THE SCHOOL, INCLUDING ACTIVITIES SUCH AS THE FOLLOWING: BICYCLE SAFETY; ENCOURAGEMENT OF HEALTHY LIFESTYLES; TUTORING; MENTORING, AND PROVIDING SCHOOL SUPPLIES AND CLOTHING TO STUDENTS IN NEED.
