Grants of up to $15,000 to USA, Canada, and Mexico researchers for creative and innovative research projects on non-lethal, humane techniques and tools for North American wildlife conflict management. The Foundation particularly welcomes projects involving the innovative use of existing technologies and new methodologies.

Habitat destruction and degradation, urban and suburban sprawl, and ongoing challenges posed by invasive species make conflicts between wildlife and humans inevitable. Homeowners, property managers, and biologists need effective strategies to deal with conflicts—whether the encounter involves coyotes, deer, Canada geese, bears, exotic species, or a host of other animals. Though improved techniques to address some situations have been developed, more are needed. Similarly, methodologies used to study wildlife need to be humane.

Salaries or stipends may be included in the budget. Allocating a portion of your budget for travel to attend meetings to present your study results is allowed and encouraged.

Estimated Size of Grant:

This grant program provides up to $15,000 to award recipients.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify for the award, the study must be conducted within the United States, Canada, and/or Mexico.

Previous award winners do not qualify for a new award for the same study in consecutive years.

Award recipients will be required to submit IACUC approval (or similar approvals for educational institutions in Canada or Mexico) for their study (if applicable).

For purposes of the application, invasive procedures refer to anything beyond simply holding the animal. Your proposal will not be automatically disqualified if it involves a minimally invasive procedure; however, it will receive additional scrutiny. Studies using more than minimally invasive procedures will not be considered for funding. If you have questions about the invasiveness of your procedures or are uncertain if your procedure would qualify as minimally invasive, please contact the funding source. Any wildlife captured for the proposed study must be released as soon as possible at their capture location.

All companion animals must come from reputable sources; be given appropriate food, housing, and companionship during the study; and be provided with the long-term care, including adoption by caring persons, at the conclusion of the study. Eligible studies must utilize humane methods of testing and handling wildlife.

AWI Policy does not allow for funds to be used for indirect costs. Purchase of animals is only allowed if the requirements noted in the instructions above are fulfilled.

Pre-Application Information:

Only fully completed applications meeting the eligibility criteria and submitted on or before May 6, 2019, will be considered for an award.

In most cases, the Christine Stevens Wildlife Award will only cover a portion of the costs of a study. In such cases, describe other source(s) and amount(s) of funds that are to be used for this study.
